cassette tapes and college nights… I go blind … 54-40

cassette tapes and college nights

1988…a Teenage Head cover band in an arena rocked out “Let’s Shake” and 54-40 played Mount Royal more than I can remember.

The Olympics and University radio…10,000 Maniacs, The Smiths and the one ad I remember betwen songs on my static jammed CJSW mixed tape;

“This is Abbie Hoffman and when I’m around these parts I listen to CJSW for the rockin’ sounds and the truth.”

I never knew who Abbie Hoffman was back then…I should have but my days were filled with sad songs and love gone wrong, inevitably.

Sitting in the basement suite with diagonal walls and pocket doors to fit in a room mate for enough rent to pay hydro and long distance.

Sitting in the basement baking nachos and cheese in a toaster oven because the real heat is so much better than microwaves.

Sitting on the floor clicking ‘cue rewind…play’, scratching out every word to 54-40’s “I go blind”

I go blind 54-40 LYRICS

Every time I look at you, I go blind.
Every time I look at you, I go blind.
In the mornin’ I get up, and I try to
Feel alive, but I can’t.
Every time I look at you, I go blind.
I don’t know what it is.
Something in me just won’t give me a chance.
I think it’s that I feel more confused
By the deal love has shown me.
Little child, did you know that there’s a light,
And it’s gonna shine right through your eyes.
What do you think that life is like?
Every time I look at you, I go blind.
I go blind
Well some where over there there’s a purpose,
There’s a care for free
In me there’s no body, no one plan,
No one stand to be free.
I think it’s that because I have seen all the fuss
And it’s no big deal. No big deal.
Hold me, hold me ’cause I want to get higher and higher,
Higher than life

Perfect – The The LYRICS
It’s a chilly English winter,
And solitude is never easy to maintain,
Except when it rains.
So I hang an empty smile beneath my empty eyes,
And go out for a walk.
The wet morning sun reflects off the paving-stones,
While a little dog barks its head off,
In the distance.CHORUS (x2)
Oh, what a perfect day,
To think about myself
My feet are firmly screwed to the floor.
What is there to fear from such a regular world?Passing by a cemetery,
I think of all the little hopes and dreams,
That lie lifeless and unfulfilled beneath the soil.
I see an old man fingering his perishing flesh.
He tells himself he was a good man and did good things.
Amused and confused by life’s little ironies,
He swallows his bottle of distilled damnation.
Chorus (X2)
People turn around with unseeing eyes.
They’re looking for something that doesn’t exist.
The world you once knew is being eaten up by rust.
No-one has time for the past, but still, in God they trust.
The future is now, but it’s all going wrong.
Bodies queue for nothing, but it’s to nothing they belong.
People say their prayers and some work hard.
If you give them all your money, they’ll give you their hearts.
This town ain’t getting like a ghost town.
It’s getting like hell….
Chorus (X5)
